Sustainable knowledge – Composition of the CO2 footprint from Scope 1, 2 and 3
The carbon footprint is the basis for making climate protection measurable with key figures. The carbon footprint indicates how much CO2 is caused by a company's activities each year. It consists out of scope 1, 2, and 3.
The terms Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions originate from the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), an internationally recognized standard for measuring and calculating greenhouse gas emissions. Below is an explanation of each scope:
Scope 1 (direct emissions): These include emissions generated directly by our own operations, such as factories, facilities, and company-owned vehicles.
Scope 2 (Indirect emissions): These refer to emissions associated with purchased energy, mainly from non-renewable electricity and natural gas.
Scope 3 (indirect emissions in the value chain): These encompass emissions generated across the supply chain, such as those from tube production.
Van Leeuwen development in Scope 1, 2 and 3
Van Leeuwen has completed various projects to reduce its CO2 footprint. The most significant project involved further transitioning operations to renewable energy and electrifying internal transport. Compared to our base year 2020, the emissions in scope 1 and 2 have decreased 37% (measured per ton steel sold), and 44% of our energy now comes from renewable sources, including green energy contracts and solar panels.
We are now focusing on reducing our Scope 3 footprint through commitment and excellent cooperations with suppliers & partners. To support this effort, we have launched our umbrella brand for CO2-reduced steel pipes and tubes: VL Impact. We are also reducing CO2 emissions in the transportation of our products.

Your CO2 reduction with Van Leeuwen Impact
As a family-owned business with a history dating back 100 years, Van Leeuwen strives for an economically healthy business whilst at the same time taking its social and environmental responsibility. We aim to lead and not to follow regarding a more sustainable way of doing business within the value chain whilst creating a great workplace for our staff. By 2030, we aim to be a global leader in sustainable pipe distribution.
Our greatest challenge is making our steel pipes and tubes more sustainable, particularly addressing Scope 3 emissions. As we do not produce these materials ourselves, we are actively engaging with suppliers to reduce CO2 emissions across the entire supply chain.
Our umbrella brand for CO2 reduced steel pipes & tubes
We have launched our umbrella brand, VL Impact, to support the sustainability ambition of our customers and partners. Under this brand, we provide CO2 reduced steel pipes & tubes, produced using innovative methods to significantly lower emissions.
We are supporting our customers to reduce their CO2 footprint (Scope 3), without compromising on quality. Transparence is created through defined CO2 categories, based on certificates. The products are sourced from suppliers who share Van Leeuwen's dedication to sustainability.

HVO100
More and more customers are looking for ways to reduce their scope-3 emissions.
One of the elements in the supply chain concerns transport. A few years ago, Van Leeuwen Zwijndrecht decided to use HVO100 renewable diesel for all its trucks in the Netherlands.
This means a considerable reduction of CO2 emissions up to 90%.
