Switzerland: Pipes for the 205-meter high Roche 2 heating and cooling system

A Swiss pharmaceutical company had a new building constructed in Basel. It is one of the largest construction projects in Switzerland. It is also the highest building in the country: Roche 2 is 205 meters high. Kindlimann in Switzerland, part of the Van Leeuwen Pipe and Tube Group, supplied the pipes and flanges for the heating and cooling system of this startling skyscraper. The stainless steel and carbon steel pipes were cut to measure and provided with the proper grooves at Kindlimann’s own production site. Kindlimann made sure that the materials were delivered on a just-in-time basis between May 2019 and February 2022 in accordance with the schedule.

The Netherlands: Pipes for innovative windmill project

A Dutch start-up has developed a small windmill with wood sails for agricultural farms. The windmills are no higher than a tree and are often installed in combination with solar panels on the roof of a farm. This combination ensures the availability of sustainable electricity throughout the year. Van Leeuwen supplies pipes to a steel company in the Northern Netherlands for the masts of the windmills. This company provides just-in-time delivery based on the customer’s needs.

The Netherlands: Hollow sections and pipes for piers in new overnight port

Between the German border and Tiel in the Netherlands there is a shortage of overnight places for skippers along the Waal and Rhine rivers. This is why Rijkswaterstaat modernized the existing Lobith overnight port a few years ago. In addition, Rijkswaterstaat is constructing a new overnight port nearby in the Bijenwaard nature preserve near the village of Spijk. This new port will have approximately 40 berths with mooring facilities for ships and push barge combinations of up to 190 meters in length. In addition, there will be berths for vessels carrying hazardous waste (with one or two daytime blue cone signs to identify the type of hazardous waste). Also, a pier with car transfer and other facilities will be constructed in the overnight port. Van Leeuwen Zwijndrecht supplied the required hollow sections and pipes for this project between April and the end of October 2022. The contractor is using these materials to construct the mooring facilities for the overnight port. Rijkswaterstaat set very high mechanical and chemical standards for the materials used to guarantee the safety and quality of the steel structures and ensure minimum maintenance costs during the operating phase. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.

‘Aside from this, the consequences of the nitrogen and PFAS issues are at play in this segment,’ says Theo Makkenze, Business Unit Manager at Van Leeuwen Zwijndrecht. ‘As a result, governments are slow in issuing construction permits or are not issuing them at all, which is putting large projects under pressure. The energy crisis and the war in Ukraine are also creating challenges. For example, due to high gas prices greenhouse growers have stopped cultivating certain crops. Moreover, flower growers have lost their sales markets in Russia due to international sanctions.’

At the same time, there are plenty of positive market developments, such as the increase in prefab residential construction and the growth of the road network. ‘Due to our global network of producers and suppliers we continue to successfully purchase materials in this tight market,’ says Makkenze. ‘Furthermore, we continue to be easily accessible to our customers and we continue to provide fast service.’

Aside from a very broad product range, Van Leeuwen also provides various custom treatments in this market, such as straight and diagonal cutting, shot-blasting and red-leading, galvanizing and swaging. Our digital services, such as our web shops and EDI, further contribute to optimizing the services we provide to our customers. See below how our pipes and tubes find their way into various structures throughout the world.

Australia: Renovation of Marvel Stadium – a prestigious construction project

The Australian construction company John Holland Group is working together with the Australian Football League (AFL) on a major upgrade of the Marvel Stadium located in the District Docklands in Melbourne. They are converting the area into a new, historic sports and entertainment center, including new business and shopping facilities. Van Leeuwen Australia is supplying 575 tons of piles (508 x 20.6 mm) and carbon steel pipes (813 x 23.2 mm, ranging in length from 11.5 m to 18.5 m) for the foundation works. ‘The Marvel Stadium project is the most prestigious construction project we have acquired in recent years,’ says Bob Marks, Victorian State Manager at Van Leeuwen Australia. The stadium is to remain open for scheduled matches and large events during the construction project. The project therefore requires very close cooperation and coordination with the customer. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2023.

Our customers in the Civil Engineering & Construction market segment are active in various areas, such as the construction of ships, bridges, road sign gantries, roofs for stations and shopping centers, sports stadiums, greenhouses and installations. Over the past two years they were affected by the many price increases and decreases due to the high volatility on the steel market, in part caused by the corona pandemic. This caused some steel producers to temporarily downscale production. Steel prices once again started dropping at the beginning of June 2022, but they are definitely not yet at pre-pandemic levels.
